En una entrevista de trabajo en inglés casi siempre salen las mismas preguntas: Tell me about yourself, Why do you want this job?, What are your strengths and weaknesses?, Tell me about a challenge you faced y Do you have any questions for us?
No te piden tu biografía.
I’m currently a customer success specialist at a software company in Bogotá, where I look after about forty business clients. Before that, I spent two years in sales, which taught me how to listen to what clients actually need. Last year I led a project that cut our response time to support tickets by half. Now I’m looking for a role where I can work with international clients, and that’s why this position caught my attention.
Ejemplo (recién graduado):
I’ve just finished my degree in industrial engineering at the Universidad de Sevilla. During my last year, I did a six-month internship in a logistics company, where I helped redesign the warehouse layout. I really enjoyed working with data to solve practical problems, so I’m looking for a junior operations role like this one.
Qué evitar: empezar por I was born in…, hablar de tu familia o de tus aficiones salvo que tengan relación con el puesto, y recitar el currículum línea por línea.
Las preguntas más frecuentes y cómo responderlas
Why do you want to work here? / Why are you interested in this role?
I’ve been following your company since you launched the payment app in Mexico, and I like how you focus on small businesses. In my current job I work with small retailers every day, so I understand their problems. I’d like to bring that experience to a team that’s growing in Latin America.
What are your strengths?
I’m very organised. In my last job I managed the schedules of three teams, and we never missed a deadline in the year I was there. I’m also good at explaining technical things in simple words, which helps a lot with clients.
What is your greatest weakness?
I used to find it hard to say no to extra tasks, and sometimes I ended up with too much work. Now I check my priorities with my manager every Monday, and that has helped me a lot.
Tell me about a time you faced a challenge (preguntas de comportamiento)
Para las preguntas que empiezan con Tell me about a time… o Give me an example of…, usa el método STAR: Situation (situación), Task (tu tarea), Action (qué hiciste tú), Result (resultado, si puede ser, con un número).
S: Last year, two days before a product launch, our main supplier told us the packaging would be late. T: I was responsible for coordinating the launch. A: I called three local suppliers, found one that could deliver in 48 hours, and adjusted the launch plan with the marketing team. R: We launched on time, and the client renewed the contract for another year.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
In five years, I’d like to be leading a small team and to have a deeper knowledge of data analysis. I think this role is a great place to build that.
Why should we hire you?
You need someone who can start working with clients from day one. I have three years of experience in a similar role, I speak Spanish and English, and I’ve already worked with the tools you mentioned in the job description.
What are your salary expectations?
Based on my experience and the market for this role, I’m looking for something between 40 and 45 thousand a year, but I’m open to discussing the whole package.
Why are you leaving your current job?
Nunca hables mal de tu empresa actual.
I’ve learned a lot in my current company, but there’s little room to grow in my area. I’m looking for a new challenge with more international work.
Do you have any questions for us?
Responder No, thank you da mala impresión. Lleva dos o tres preguntas:
- What does a typical day look like in this role?
- How do you measure success for this position in the first six months?
- What are the next steps in the process?
Frases útiles para ganar tiempo y sonar natural
| Frase | Para qué sirve |
|---|---|
| That’s a good question. Let me think for a second. | Ganar unos segundos sin quedarte en silencio. |
| Could you repeat the question, please? | Pedir que repitan. |
| Do you mean…? / Just to make sure I understand… | Confirmar que entendiste la pregunta. |
| For example… / For instance… | Introducir un ejemplo. |
| What I mean is… | Reformular si te has liado. |
| I’m not sure, but I’d probably… |
| Thank you for your time. I look forward to hearing from you. | Cerrar la entrevista. |
Errores típicos de hispanohablantes en entrevistas
- «I have experience in» vs. «I have experience with». Experience in + área (experience in marketing); experience with + herramienta o tipo de cliente (experience with Excel, with large clients). Y nunca I have 3 years of experiences: experience en este sentido es incontable.
- «Actually» y «currently». Currently I work as… = actualmente trabajo como… Actually significa «en realidad».
- «Assist» no es «asistir». «Asistí a un curso» es I attended a course. Assist significa ayudar.
- «Carrer» y «career». «Estudié la carrera de Economía» = I studied economics o I have a degree in economics.
- «Responsible of». Es responsible for: I was responsible for the budget.
- «Formation». Formación académica es education o training, no formation.
- Respuestas demasiado largas.
Preguntas frecuentes
¿Cuánto debe durar mi respuesta a «Tell me about yourself»?
Pide que la repitan: Sorry, could you repeat that? o Could you rephrase the question?
Thank you for your time, I really enjoyed our conversation. I look forward to hearing from you.
