How long is IELTS valid? Rules for UK visas, Canada and universities

IELTS recommends that results are accepted for two years from the test date. The exact rule is set by the organisation you send your result to: a university, a visa authority or an employer. Most accept results up to two years old, but the details differ.
The key facts
- 2 years is the IELTS recommendation for every organisation that accepts the test.
- From the test date: the period starts on the day of the exam shown on your Test Report Form, not the day you received the result.
- No extensions: a result cannot be renewed or extended without taking the test again.
- The organisation decides: a university or authority may ask for a more recent result or accept an older one.
Visas, universities and migration
| Where you apply | How long the result is accepted | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS recommendation | 2 years from the test date | a general guide; the organisation has the final word |
| UK visas, IELTS for UKVI | 2 years from the date the result was issued | if the visa needs a SELT, only IELTS for UKVI counts, not standard IELTS |
| Canada, Express Entry | under 2 years old both when you create your profile and when you apply | General Training only; One Skill Retake is not accepted |
| Universities | set by each university, most often 2 years | some check the date when you apply, others when the course starts |

How to work out your expiry date
- Open your Test Report Form, paper or electronic. The test date is next to your scores.
- Ask the organisation when the result must be valid: on the day you apply, create a profile or start your course.
- Add the period the organisation requires. If it is two years, a result from 10 May 2025 works for applications made before 10 May 2027.
- Leave a margin: if your application might be delayed, plan a new test in good time.
If your result is about to expire
- Apply earlier. If the organisation checks validity on the application date, applying before the two years run out may be enough.
- Book a new test. Results arrive 1–5 days after the test, but the next free date at your centre may be weeks away.
- Do not count on an extension. Neither a remark (Enquiry on Results) nor One Skill Retake extends an old result.
- Check your level before booking. Two years is long enough for your band to move either way. A mock test shows which section has slipped before you pay for the exam.
Common questions
When does the two-year period start? On the test date printed on your Test Report Form. The day you received your result does not matter.
Can I extend my IELTS certificate? No. Once it expires, you take the whole test again.
Does One Skill Retake extend validity? No. It can only be taken within 60 days of your main test, and not every centre offers it. It is a way to improve one section, not to renew an old result.
Will a university accept a result older than two years? That is the university’s decision. Look for the rule on the course page or ask the admissions office.
