“Where are you from” in Chinese: how to say it and how to write it

你是哪国人?

Where are you from?

To say where you are from in Chinese, take the name of your country and add 人, rén, “person”: 我是美国人, wǒ shì Měiguó rén — “I’m American”, literally “I am America person”. The question that comes first is 你是哪国人?, nǐ shì nǎ guó rén — “you are which-country person?”

How to ask “Where are you from?” in Chinese

  • 你是哪国人?nǐshìnǎguórénwhere are you from? (which country)
  • 请问您是哪国人?qǐngwènnínshìnǎguórénmay I ask where you are from?
  • 你来自哪个国家?nǐláizìnǎgeguójiāwhich country do you come from?
  • 你是哪里人?nǐshìnǎlǐrénwhere are you from? (which place)

哪 (nǎ, third tone) means “which”, and 国 (guó) is “country”. As in every Chinese question, the question word stays where the answer will go: “you are which-country person?” — “I am America person”. Don’t mix up 哪 nǎ “which” with 那 nà “that”: they differ in tone and in writing. 你是哪里人 asks about a place rather than a country — a city or a province — so Chinese people often ask it of each other; as a foreigner you can answer it with your country or your city.

How to answer: 我是…人

  • 我是美国人。wǒshìMěiguórénI’m American
  • 他是中国人。tāshìZhōngguórénhe is Chinese
  • 我是俄罗斯人。wǒshìÉluósīrénI’m Russian / I’m from Russia

The pattern is “I” + 是 (shì, “am, is, are”) + country + 人. Nothing changes for gender or number: 美国人 is an American man, an American woman and Americans; 我们是英国人 is “we’re British”. The same pattern works for cities: 我是纽约人 (wǒ shì Niǔyuē rén) — “I’m from New York”, 他是北京人 (tā shì Běijīng rén) — “he’s from Beijing”.

  • 我来自俄罗斯。wǒláizìÉluósīI come from Russia
  • 你住在哪儿?nǐzhùzàinǎrwhere do you live?

来自 means “to come from”: 我来自美国 (wǒ láizì Měiguó) is a bit more formal than 我是美国人 — the way you introduce yourself on a form, in a presentation or on stage. Where you live now is a separate question: 住 “to live” + 在 “in”, so the answer is 我住在… — “I live in…”. How to give your name is on the page “My name is” in Chinese.

There are two kinds of names. Many are written by sound: three or four characters chosen to read like the original, 加拿大 Jiānádà for Canada. Some old, well-known ones were cut down to their first syllable plus 国 “country”: 美国, 英国, 法国, 德国. The meaning of those first characters is a happy accident — 美 also means “beautiful” and 英 “hero”, which is why 美国 is often explained as “the beautiful country”. 中国 and 日本, on the other hand, are real descriptions: “the middle country” and “the origin of the sun”.

Every country name works with 人 in the same way: 加拿大人 Canadian, 印度人 Indian, 墨西哥人 Mexican. The page of the word 中国 has its recording and stroke order, and so does 俄罗斯.

Languages: add 语

  • 英语YīngyǔEnglish
  • 西班牙语XībānyáyǔSpanish
  • 俄语ÉyǔRussian
  • 中文ZhōngwénChinese
  • 汉语HànyǔChinese (the language)

A language is the country’s name with 语 (yǔ, “language”): 西班牙语 is “Spain language”. Short names keep only the first character: 英语, 法语, 德语, 俄语. American English is still 英语, the same word as in Britain. Chinese itself is 中文 or 汉语 — both are fine in conversation. So a full introduction might go: 我是美国人,我说英语 — “I’m American, I speak English”.
