Words by HSK level
Every word in the dictionary belongs to the HSK 3.0 syllabus. As lists by topic, with audio and a self-check, they are on the level pages:
- HSK 1 words — 302 words
- HSK 2 words — 200 words
- HSK 3 words — 500 words
- HSK 4 words — 1,000 words
- HSK 5 words — 1,600 words
- HSK 6 words — 1,800 words
Ready-made phrases — “I love you”, “how are you”, “how much is it” — are collected in Chinese phrases, single characters by topic are on the page Chinese characters with meanings, and the pinyin chart shows how to read pinyin.
Common questions
How do I find a word in the Chinese–English dictionary?
Type the word into the search box in English (“thank you”), in pinyin with or without tones (“xiexie”, “xie4xie”) or in characters (“谢谢”). The dictionary shows the matching words, and each one has its own page with pronunciation, characters stroke by stroke and examples.
How many words are in the dictionary?
About 5,400 words — every word of the HSK 3.0 syllabus from level 1 to level 6. That is enough to read the news and pass HSK 6.
Can I search in pinyin without tones?
Yes. You can leave the tone marks out or type them as numbers: ni hao, nihao and ni3hao3 all find the same word, 你好. Spaces don’t matter either.
Do the words have audio?
Yes. Every word page has a recording: a native speaker for most words, a synthesized voice for the rest. The page also shows the tone of each syllable.
How is this dictionary different from a translator?
A translator turns whole phrases and texts into another language. A dictionary explains one word: how to read it, which characters it is made of, how each character is written and which phrases it appears in. That works better for learning: you remember the word together with an example.
